Peeling skin on bottom of big toes

On the bottom of my big toes is a patch of skin where the skin lifts and peels with the grain of the skin. It is almost like tiny hangnails all in a clump on the bottom of my foot. They go in layers almost like fish scales and it seems quite hard and dry.

As it peels, it gets sore, since it gets a bit deeper. It really hurts sometimes. It catches on thick socks.

Any idea what it might be?

It could be a fungal infection.

Sounds like athletes foot(fungal infection). The pharmacist can recommend something for it, try not to pick at it

Maybe planing it with a corn/callus remover, but only one layer at a time very gradually.

I think you need to see GP.I get this and at first thought it was athletes foot. The nurse said it was excema and got some betnovate ointment and need to keep it well moisturised with scent free basic moisturiser.
I couldn't walk on it when it was really bad -its better now but nowhere cleared up.She also said that it would come and go on hands and feet- great.

Ezcema does sound a possibility.

I don't think it's verrucas (have had them before). It doesn't look like normal athlete's foot (skin is dry and scaly, not moist and clammy).

I don't particularly wear ballet pumps. Usually trainers / walking boots / leather ankle boots. Indoors I'm either in just socks, or leather sandals (often with socks but only cos our kitchen floor's too cold for just socks. Can't believe I just admitted that in public. )

You might need some counselling for the socks+sandals affliction

At least I know it's something to be ashamed of which is half the problem for many people IMO.

There is a type of verucca called mosaic, my ds had that on the side & under his big toe, there were no black spots visible, it did took like a mosaic, scaly/peely pieces of skin fitting closely together, none of the otc verucca treatments were suitable as the area was too spread and also reaching the nail, he had a prescription cream for it.
At the time I didn't know about banana skin or duct tape, maybe that would have worked too?

AngelD.., widely publicised on MN verucca treatment - either banana skin taped closely to the wart or heavy duty duct tape, change when comes off. Works on veruuca and worth trying as a home remedy, not tried it for this particular type but banana skin can't hurt :)

What if it only happens when flip flops or barefoot indoors comes into play? Its always in the same spots on each big toe. Only a small space on the bottom. No discoloration, no other toe or nail involvement. I think my sandals/flip flops are the right size. Seems inevitable.

Any resolution to this? Did you find out what it was and get an effective treatment for it?

I know EXACTLY what you are talking about and am looking for answers too! Same experience to a T and definitely not a fungal problem. Also cannot hardly find references to it anywhere online.
