Advice needed: Urine infection in 2 yo DS - Trimethoprim

DS is 2 and has been taking Trimethoprim (sp?) for suspected urine infection. He has been on it for 24/48 hours now and although he seems a LOT better, he is still witholding his urine until his bladder is so full he cries shouting "ouch mummy ouch sore" then his nappy is sodden with him having held it for so long.

Surely the antibiotics should have taken full effect by now? Maybe not since it is low dosage due to his age (allergic to penicillin so they prescibed low dose Trimethoprim)?

Anyway, his urine doesn't smell bad now and it is not cloudy but he still complains it hurts. He was screaming in pain before the antibiotics and now he seems uncomfortable rather than in pain so does this sound right?

Thanks for any answers on this. I don't know anyone with boys that have had a urine infection before. Usually girls apparently so I am worried there might be something else wrong with him you know? Paranoid.... blush

Thanks

Lol, there's nothing wrong with boys getting what I assume is cystitus? It will take about a week for him to stop complaining probably, it will feel a lot better already though. It's natural to be afraid of weeing when it's been hurting him so much, poor boy. Cranberry juice is excellent for urine/bladder infections if you can get him to drink it. Hope this helps.

Thanks very much. He is a lot better already. I was just worried about it still hurting so you are right about being afraid when it was so painful for him.

I'll get some cranberry juice too. I had heard Actimel is meant to be good or any probiotic so I've got him some Aptamil growing up milk since it says it has something like that in it. I was told Actimel is only for over 3 so don't want to risk it.

Thanks again
