it came up yesterday and my tonsils were totally white.....ive never had it before and my limbs were soooo achy from head to toe...felt like ive ran a 10k marathon in high heels!! Shock

i woke up this morning feeling tiny teeny weeny better and went to the docs but he told me that the infection is not that bad (which i agree as there is less white today on my tonsils).

How long does this last for?

thanks

I have had bad tonsillitis this year - in hospital was given painkillers regularly, antibiotics iv and difflam mouthwash - so when had it recently and not in hospital I used the painkillers and bought difflam mouthwash (which numbs it longer than the ice lollies I was using!) it really helped .... hope it goes soon.

frostyfingers · 11/10/2010 17:02

Tis truly grim, many sympathies. Have you got antibiotics? In which case you should see an improvement in about 48 hrs. If not it will take longer - gargling soluble aspirin is quite effective, though pretty horrible in itself. Hope you feel better soon.

ditavonteesed · 11/10/2010 17:08

so much sympathy, last time I had it I also ended up in hospiutal on some serius pain killers. it should get better in a day or 2 if you've got anti biotics now, just dose up ion pain relief and rest as much as you can.

biglips · 11/10/2010 18:15

ill try and rest but ive got my dd2 who is 1 and dd1 who is 6 had got a very very sore throat so she is off school atm. She was given paracetomol and i wasnt given anything. Sad but just to take painkillers.

i feel so knackered with a banging headache coming on now and again, i feel for you all who ended up in hospital!

ive only started to eat this afternoon but just a bowlful of cheese and ham and a fabulous lolly-ice called "Twister" ive never had it before but it was so damn good!! Grin

Yes ive bought aspirin today so will gargle with that....how often? and will try the salt too...soooo not looking forward to that!

and think ive ran out of mouthwash as i have Dentyl..brilliant stuff but will it be too strong for my throat??.

Take paracetamol, nurofen and cocodamol at night if you can (if not bf)

Eat jelly, or very soft slidy cool noodles

Try to keep drinking water in spite of pain, could mean the diff btwn home and hospitalisation

If you vomit bile, don't do it on your best duvet

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/10/2010 18:25

Eugh blimey I thought I'd had it bad before but hospital? Cripes.

My best tip is cuddle up in a duvet and watch films to take your mind off the pain. That painkiller gargle just made me retch but you could try lemsip or beechams (I know they're for colds but they have painkillers in and they're not grainy/chalky).

Tins of tomato or chicken soup with some soft bread & butter broken up into it works a treat (NOT toast). Jelly and icecream. Fizzy drinks. Hot ribena. Not milky stuff though as the gukky stuff in your throat will annoy.

Take it easy, get a hot water bottle, rest up.

Hope you feel better soon.

lou33 · 11/10/2010 18:41

Huge sympathies to you. Dd2 has it atm, and my friend has just been discharged from hospital after having it.

Both got given anti biotics, and dd was also advised to eat scratchy food as well as plenty of fluids.

I hate getting it

Fwiw i also have dd1 with bronchitis and have some rotten virus.
Feel better soon

biglips · 11/10/2010 19:53

yeah weve had a movie on this afternoon.

i so feel for the little ones who got/has them!!

So once ive had it, i will get it again??

biglips · 11/10/2010 19:54

TheNextMrsDepp · 11/10/2010 19:59

Big sympathies - I come down with it about once every five years and it totally pole-axes me - temp of 104 last time, I literally couldn't move.

Antibiotics are what you want, and lots of tlc.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/10/2010 20:03

Yep you might well get it again, sorry. I had it once a month for about a year once. In the end I had some acupuncture (cynical but my mum paid as she Has Faith :o) to break the cycle, and it stopped thank goodness.

DirtyMartini · 11/10/2010 20:31

Interesting, Elephants

I had it so badly a couple of years ago that I couldn't swallow my own saliva without crying in pain, let alone anything else. I was spitting to avoid the pain of swallowing, getting really dehydrated. Hence the vomiting bile, cos I hadn't eaten anything for about a week. I should have been in hospital apparently but there was a bit of fuckwittery confusion amongst the GPs so I didn't fully grasp that until afterwards.

Was def the most painful experience of my life, genuinely far worse than back-to-back stalled labour with no drugs. People who have had more normal cases of tonsillitis always think I am overstating it but it was hell.

Meglet · 11/10/2010 20:36

It's hurts like hell Sad. Same here for not being able to swallow saliva, I remember lying in bed on my back listening to the radio (turned on by my mum Grin)as it hurt to sit up, move my neck and watch TV.

I first got it in 1993 and still get it most years. Although not so bad these days

Didn't know some people ended up in hospital with it Shock

DirtyMartini · 11/10/2010 20:41

I think it's just so you can be given a drip for hydration and possibly iv meds as well. Swallowing a paracetamol was what made me vomit bile Grin (I'm obviously just trying to say 'vomit bile' as many times in one thread as I can)

OP sorry to bang on, really hope you knock it on the head soon.

MadameCastafiore · 11/10/2010 20:45

Go and get some hydrogen peroxide from the chemist (ia about 47p) water down as directed on the bottle and gargle - bacteria on your tonsils will be oxidised and you will be better in 24hours without taking those nasty antibiotics.

I can't take the antibiotics after having them so much that they illicit a reaction in me. SO had to turn to this and bloody hell it works - tastes like you have licked a magy foxes arse when the stuff fizzes the bacteria off of your tonsils but it really really works.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/10/2010 22:46

Sorry but this thread is quite funny :o

SlummyMummyAndProud · 11/10/2010 23:14

Used to tonsillitis 4-5 times a year from the age of 13 so i sympathise.

Was hospitalised most times.

Oraldene mouthwash can help but it tastes vile.

Luckily I had mine removed about 4yrs ago so no longer have to suffer it.

BooBooImpaledOnBrokenGlass · 11/10/2010 23:23

O god no to whoever recommended tomato soup. It's more acidic than you realise til you have a raw throat. Ditto juice and potatoes.
I too have been hospitalised with hideous tonsillitus. The last time before they agreed to take them out was so bad that not only could I not swallow, I couldn't even breathe Shock Totally agree, worse than labour for me. OP, if this is a regular thing for you, do pester to get them removed. It took that very serious bout to finally gt on the waiting list, despite having had infections every few months for years and years. They are very reluctant to do it in adults, but I am far better in myself since gettign the useless little buggers removed.

bacon · 11/10/2010 23:40

Mine comes in bouts. Usually in winter when the kids bring home all the cold virus.

There is a difference between viral and bacterial. Hence anti bios will do nothing if viral. I think bacterial are very very pussey, and they swell so bad they actually look infected.

Mine swell (viral)but are not as bad as descibed above but my body is shot, the shoting pains in my arms, ears are unbelievable. Headaches not shifted by any over the counter meds.

Prob worse for 2 days then gradually better within 5 days.

Unless they are infected GPs shouldnt be giving anti bios as they have no effect. Tonsils do have a function to trap germs and virus. Because I do have a throat weakness the virus attacks here.

Really nasty!

SpeedyGonzalez · 11/10/2010 23:42

Gargle twice daily with port or listerine to kill off the current infection.

Then make sure you get lots of good sleep, EVERY DAY.

I did not rest when I had tonsillitis, and the bugs stayed in my system for almost 2 years. Every time I got run down it would flare up again.

Good luck.

ditavonteesed · 12/10/2010 08:26

hope your feeling a bit better this morning, remembering the reducing bunch of grapes that were my tonsils last time, and waking up with my lips stuck together yuck.
hospital is so they can get antibiotics in quikcker as my throat closed up so coldn't even swallow an ice chip, iv fluids etc. dh was shocked said it had never occured to him that you could end up in hospital with tonsilitus.

biglips · 12/10/2010 09:52

i gargled on the aspirin last night but couldnt feel it was working and now im gargling on resolve and it feel its working. Well today its day 3 and my neck is so tender, sore and feels very swollen. my ears are painful but i can put up with that but its the pounding heavy headaches is getting to me as only pounds when im stand up and walk. Good news that my dd1 who is 6 is loads better today - phew!! but her tongue is still very spotty and ive noticed that her temp goes up when she is eating so keeping an eye on that and still fingers cross that my dd2 who is 2 doesnt gets it!! or ill cry!
