dd2 gags or is sick after meals - getting more regular, help!

Poor old dd2 gags after she eats. It used to be very occassionally, but recently its almost every day.

It is almost as if she eats so much, she has no room in her tummy for it all. At the weekend she threw up all her food twice. She has normal poos and eats very very well as a rule. should I be concerned.

how old is she?

My dd's father had a hernia somewhere (in his throat or at top of stomach) he was born with it is it called a hiathas hernia or something. He had the same symptom though.. possibility?

get tonsils checked!

Should add, you could really tell he was struggling if he ate quickly and I think particular foods (like fresh bread) caused more of a problem as well.

she is nearly 3

she has always beeen 'sicky'

but I realised the other day that I had to mention it to nursery and at that point I thought 'hmmmmmmm surely not right'

Not necessarily concerned, Enid, but I'd get it checked out. It could be a hiatus hernia, as MOH says...or maybe the hair-trigger gag reflex that infants have is lingering with her longer than average...

oh I cant bear it

I have a pathological fear of taking kids to the docs/hospital

also she is such a good eater I can't bear the idea of them having to do tests that might give her a complex

Enid, my DS does this - he is nearly 4. He eats his dinner quite happily then will gag on the last mouthful and then is sick. He tends to put too much in his mouth and I have supervise him quite closely.

Also, I think they don't know when to stop eating if they like the taste and therefore their stomach lets them know they are full not their brain! Worth getting checked but may be nothing to worry about.

From the sound of things she is very well generally so I thought tests would be very unlikely and reassurance might be more the order of the day. But if the very process of taking her to the GPs is likely to be more stressful...get dh to take her Enid!

this sounds like dd2. She munches away and then whacks a last great mouthful in and thats what does it.

Although she has started doing it at breakfast when she says 'I'm not hungry, I sick'

does she wake up in the night with any pain (thinking heartburn pain)? does she get a lot of coughs?

I think you probably can't get away without a visit to docs - I imagine they will think of reflux and will check for hiatus hernia.

and as mumtosomeone says, make sure they check for large tonsils

She is probably relating eating to being sick so you've obviously got to break the cycle. (Stating the obvious!) Easier said than done but I would chop her food up quite small, make sure she finishes each mouthful before putting more in etc. Basic stuff and at 3+ you tend to relax about supervising their mealtimes as closely as you would a toddler but my DS does choke so regularly we have gone back to basics!
