Hello guys,
Im the type of person who doesn't really go to the doctors unless something is really wrong but iv'e booked an appointment for Thursday because this is slightly worrying me...

So all day today and yesterday I have been really uncomfortable because every 10 -30 minutes I get this feeling in my left side where I assume my kidney is, that feels like a cross between someone is squeezing it and that really horrible feeling you got when you were pregnant and the baby would stick it's foot in your ribs lol

Last night I went to the loo before bed and there was a little bit of blood when I wiped and my urine has been very dark today as if it is tainted with blood like on a light flow but I am in middle of pack of pills and nowhere near due on [sorry if Tmi!}

Normally I would pass this kind of thing off unless it got worse but I only have one kidney so it makes me nervous if anything around that area gives me trouble so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

COuld it be cystitis?

Danthe4th · 05/10/2010 16:40

I would take a urine sample in in the morning and ask them to test for infection, it will save a wait when you go for your appointment.

SleepyDopeyGrumpy · 05/10/2010 16:49

I dont know What that is orm and danthe my doctors is very very poor when it comes to anything over than throwing painkillers at everybody and saying wait and see they certainly wont do anything that day other than to tell me to come back if it gets worse Angry

I Should mention there is no actual pain just a very uncomfortable jumping and squeezing sensation and there is no pain or burning when i wee which i usually get with a urinary infection.

Cystitis is a nasty but largely harmless bladder infection. It can lead to blood in the urine if you leave it long enough, a horrible griping belly pain but very painful when you wee. So maybe not that.

Sounds horrible.

If you have only one kidney they should take this seriously Angry Try drinking more water, a warm bath or a hot water bottle on the sore area and see your GP asap!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 05/10/2010 17:11

I would ring NHS direct, if you only have 1 Kidney then surely its best to be safe than sorry, its probably an infection but Kidney infections can turn nasty quickly.

SleepyDopeyGrumpy · 05/10/2010 17:19

Thank you ladies i rang nhs direct who seemed to take it quite seriously and suggested the minute i feel pain i ring my out of hours doctor or go to a walk in centre but i think i will wait for thursday as i have college tomorrow and dont really have the time and lie i said the actual Pain isnt there just the blood and squeezing thing!

Sorry if ive made a fuss its probably nothing and by the time thursday comes will have dissapeared and then ill look like a hypochondriac Blush

it sounds as if you might have a small kidney stone or a urine infection. You need to see a doc.

CMOTdibbler · 05/10/2010 19:54

I think you really need to go to out of hours - if you only have one kidney an infection tracking to it could be v serious

SleepyDopeyGrumpy · 05/10/2010 21:13

Kids are asleep in bed and doesn't seem to be worse so ill just have to hold off until docs appointment as the docs round here dont come out to see you just maybe prescribe some antibiotic for me to pick up tomorrow so Whats one more day really i dont want to make a fuss if it turns out to be just a water infection or tiny kidney stone that will sort itself out Confused

SleepyDopeyGrumpy · 05/10/2010 21:54

Oh dear just went loo and there was more blood when i wiped Confused

Do you think my doctors would be mad at me if i cancelled Thursdays appointment and just went to a walk in centre tomorrow? I really dont want to wait for the agonising pain if it is an infection or kidney stone and antibiotics a day earlier could make the difference couldn't it or am i just overacting? Oh I dont know i feel all worried im going to wake up tomorrow in pain and there's nobody to calm me down Sad

alypaly's right, it does sound like remal colic (a kidney stone). To be honest, your GP won't be able to do alot. You need to pop to A&E, especially as you only have one kidney. If it's a small stone then it will work it's way out, there's no way of knowing how large the stone is without an x-ray though. Your GP should send you for one but it's my I'mnotastudentradiographeranymore opinion that this needs the imput from a radiologist and a urologist sooner rather then later.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 05/10/2010 22:07

sorry about the spelling, I'm almost finished working and am here for 30 seconds so I can have a break.

SleepyDopeyGrumpy · 05/10/2010 22:16

Thanks Belle i will go and get checked out tomorrow instead of waiting until thursday x

You'll probably find that it's gone, in the mean time drink to try to flush it out. The blood will be because it's scratching the ureter on the way down. I've had a stone, I could feel it moving downwards. I've seen more then a few in patients aswell. Please, please go to A&E if you stop passing urine. It's very important that you do this. Ibuprofen will help with the pain and inflammation.

SleepyDopeyGrumpy · 05/10/2010 22:26

Should i be in pain then because im not at all which is the weird thing!

OP posts:
belledechocolatefluffybunny · 05/10/2010 22:28

No, not necessarily. Mine didn't hurt alot, I've seen people in severe pain from theirs though. The ibuprofen will help with any inflammation of the ureter, a hot water bottle is also supposto help it pass. Normally I'd say if it's not painful then wait for it to pass but if you only have one kidney then it needs medical attention.
I hope it goes away soon.
