Hi all, my ds is 4 and had a bad far infection g.p gave him a wk of antibiotics then saw him again and said it's still red and looks like it has burst, she said don't let it get wet and it can take a few weeks to heal. That was a week ago today and he got really bad again this weekend, he couldn't play just wanted to sleep but was too sore and cried and cried yesterday and all throughout the night, I just gave calpol and nurofen alternatively and held and cuddled him but he was in a lot of pain and had high temps. I'm bringing him to g.p now but I just had a look at his far and it's unbelievable its all stuff/gunk white and yellow and watery lookin stuff and a white blob type lump sorry im not describing it well but i got such a shock when I saw it, the poor little man :( so I don't know if I should leave it so the doctor see's it or if I could damage his ear by cleaning? It looks awful and its really sore to touch what should I do wait till doc see's it? Or will she think I'm stupid and dirty not to clean it?? I'm just worried I could damage or hurt him...

When DD has had this, I've just cleaned the very outside of the ear so that it's not visibly gunky. I've left the inside as I presumed it would be very sore.

I hope he gets it sorted ASAP.

Oh poor little fella. Hope the GP sees him quickly.
Think I'd just leave it for GP to see, maybe the nurse could clean it, I wouldn't want to risk making it worse.

Hope he gets better soon, sounds awful.

I would clean the outside of the ear; my DD usually perks up after the drum has burst as it takes the pressure off, so don't panic that it's a bad thing. Burst ear drums look worse than they often are, but still wise to get checked up

Thanks for the advice ladies :) I'm lucky she took him within minutes

Sorry stupid mobile internet... I didn't mean to post yet... But ya she took him straight away and said I did the right thing not touching it (thanks!) and its so painful to touch anyways I don't know if he'd even have let me... She prescribed him stronger antibiotics and 3 times a day as opposed to twice the last week. My poor little man he was crying with the pain just while we were waiting for the medicine in the chemist and just looks so sick :( I know that it should improve now its burst and he's takin the antibiotics but he still has a high temp is still not up to eating and is just so sore and miserable :( he fell asleep a little while ago and has managed to stay asleep (he's so exhausted as am I after that night...) hopefully he'll wake up a little better... The ear is so yucky looking but she said it should dry and fall out bit by bit and he'll prob start scratching it etc but not clean it at all... Thanks again for the advice everyone
