Jeni I'm so, so sorry you are going through this. Hair loss is so utterly demoralising and changes totally how you feel about yourself. I don't know why it is that our self-image is so linked to our hair but it is, so losing hair makes us lose all confidence in our self-image. I have gone through three occasions in my life (once when I was 16, once when I was 23 and recently at 42) when I lost lots of my hair. The worst time was when I was 23 when I lost over half of my hair. Each of these times in my life co-incided with a time of great stress/anxiety, and no matter what supplements I took or how I tried not to wash my hair too much, kept it tied back so I wasn't so conscious of it coming out in handfuls, changed my diet, tried special shampoos etc etc....nothing worked! It was only when the stressful time had passed on each occasion that I noticed my hair had stopped falling out and gradually it started to grow back. On each occasion my hair did seem to fully grow back (well I hope it does this time!). So I wonder if there is something happening in your life that is causing you anxiety or stress??? Our bodies can react in such a physical way to mental stress, if you can remove yourself from a stressful situation (if there is one) then it might have a very immediate effect on your hair. I really hope things get better for you.

Jenifleurbird, there's a page about this on the BBC Health website:
www.bbc.co.uk/health/physical_health/conditions/hair_loss_women.shtml

Maybe it would be worth going back to your GP and asking whether any of that is relevant in your case. If it is stress-related, as JellyBelly relates, maybe your GP can provide some help with that.

Alternatively, perhaps you could phone around some hairdressers in your area and ask if they have someone who specialises in fragile or brittle hair who could advise on good management techniques - or perhaps tell you if there is a college that trains hairdressers who might be interested in helping you as part of their training courses.

JellyBelly - it is horrible what stress can do to us. It's bad enough going through whatever that stress is, but it's worse when the effects can hit us later and especially in a way that really doesn't help our self-esteem.

I've noticed that my hair has become thinner. And I do seem to shed lots of it each day. I'm really worried.

There are two things I can think of that might be contributing factors - I've recently moved house, which was v. stressful, and I'm also on the pill.

If I came off the pill would this help regrowth? Indeed, I wonder if it will ever regrow? When I part it, it really is starting to look a bit threadbare. It's so disturbing.

I feel very Sad for the other posters experiencing the same thing.

I have found coming off hormonal contraception - injection and pill, my hair is thicker.
All blood tests showed up fine but Ive been taking Iron supplement as it can be a cause and vitamin b12. Its worth a try just getting some and trying doesnt hurt anything!! Ive also been taking multi vitamin too. I dont know which is the benefactor but Im grateful and still taking them all. My hair has grown like mad and thickened art the roots load. I could see thru my hair to my scalp before and feld bald!!
