Constant lump in throat feeling - getting paranoid

I've been a bit paranoid about cancer since my dad died of throat cancer a few years back. He was a drinker but not a smoker. I am also a drinker (drink a fair bit too much) but have never smoked. Because I havent smoked and am 40 rather than 70 doc wasn't very interested, but I am still fretting...what else thats nicer than the big C can this wierd feeling be?

It could be your thyroid? I expect he had a feel of that.

If it isn't better by itself within a week or two, go back, try and get a referral to ENT so they can have a look. There are loads of benign things it could be...try not to fret.

Not entirely sure where thyroid is [dim emoticon] but this feels like when something gets stuck in your throat and won't shift. A bit annoying if nothing else. Could just go back to doc and whinge I guess. The doctor didnt actually feel or look at anything when I went before. Very reassuring!

I get this intermittently- went to a doctor a year ago and he said one of my tonsils was inflamed. I was supposed to have laser treatment on it but then it got better so I backed out of surgery. Of course it came back. Is it on a side or in the middle?

OopsDoneItAgain · 28/09/2010 20:15

It feels in the middle. I have had it fairly constantly for a few months now.

I have this feeling sometines when I have a cold. all that gunk and swollen lymphs.

the thyroid is at the base of your neck, below your voicebox iyswim.

if the feeling persists and with your family history I would insist on an investigation.

winnybella · 28/09/2010 20:22

Also that doctor discovered I had a verucca on a base of my tongue (ewww)- I don't think I felt it by perhaps if it's in a different place it's possible. Another thing that comes to mind is polyps.

Deffinitely go back to the doctor- a specialist this time and have him take a look- no point in worrying.

globus hystericus is a common response to stress and should gradually fade if you find ways to distract your attention away from it and focus on physically relaxing.
