Are threadworms painful when you go to the loo or just itchy?

Just itchy.. But i've they've scratched in their sleep they may have a little cut.. They come out late at night/ evening time..
If they are very young they won't know what 'itchy' means and sore discribes everything..

so if they say they feel itchy and sore in the day it's not likely to be threadworms but something else?

Its worth having a look when they fall asleep.
It could also be thrush?

It could be them during the day too, especially if wearing tights they are attracted to the heat
