I'm going to make an appointment with the doctors tomorrow, but wondered if anyone else has experienced this. DD2 is 8 weeks old and is breastfed with only 1 bottle of formula a day - she hasn't pooed since yesterday morning and i'm worried now.

i thought breastfed babies were suppose to poo alot. otherwise she seems fine, still smiley. you can see sometimes she's trying to poo but nothing comes out.

any thoughts??

They can go up to a week without pooing! As long as she seems well in herself I wouldn't worry. When she does go, if it isn't hard and compacted then she isn't constipated.

Be warned - the longer she goes, the further up her back it will go when it does come out!!!

ponygirl · 04/09/2005 18:30

Don't worry, very common I think in breastfed babies. Ds2's record was 4 days!

ponygirl · 04/09/2005 18:31

Oooh yes, tortoiseshell's right! I'd forgotten that: when it does come it tends to be quite dramatic. Don't go out without lots of nappies and spare clothes!

yes, one of mine did this. I forget what his record was. He seemed ok though.

Hi blossom2, I remember there being another thread on this & I've just done a search. I can't do the link so if you search on current threads it was called 'Really unconfident about breast feeding'. You might find some comments on there that set your mind at ease.

I know my son went for quite a few days.

NannyL · 04/09/2005 19:08

i wouldnt worry.... breast milk is SOOO perfect that very often there simply is next to no 'waste'!

just think, you must be making really PERFECT breast milk!

QueenOfQuotes · 04/09/2005 19:10

DS1 from about 1 month until 4 months every Friday (around 5pm) one MASSIVE poo - perfectly normal

SofiaAmes · 05/09/2005 05:08

Perfectly normal!!!! Just be thankful you got one of the doesn't-poo-very-often variety. Think of how many fewer pooey nappies you will be changing.

My bf ds pooed 2 or 3 times a day, but I got lucky, my bf dd only pooed once every 5 days.

bobbybob · 05/09/2005 05:16

I found with growth spurts ds simply used every bit and so there was no waste

Leogaela · 06/09/2005 21:03

blossom - my ds didn't poo for 5 days sometimes. I used to drink a couple of glasses of apple juice everyday and it seemed to get things working again for him.

pesha · 06/09/2005 21:27

Yeah perfectly normal i think my ds pooed about once a fortnight! And when it came it was a huge explosion of poo!!

bonym · 06/09/2005 21:29

My dd2 doesn't go for over a week sometimes and then we get a huge explosion! Breastmilk is almost completely absorbed by a baby which is why they sometimes don't go for days.

nell12 · 06/09/2005 21:59

Went to Dr in a panic after 5 poo-free days, and he said "yes, and??" he said don't worry until you get to 8 days! DD was completely breastfed at this point!

orangina · 06/09/2005 22:26

I remember going to the paediatrician at 6 weeks (about something else), and mentioned that dd only pooed about eevry 3-4 days. His comment was "sounds like the perfect baby...", and confirmed that once a week is fine....

mrsdarcy · 06/09/2005 22:49

My 7 week old (exclusively breastfed) only poos a few times a week as well. Although I know that's normal, she seems much happier and more comfortable after she has pooed.

janeybops · 06/09/2005 23:02

perfectly normal ime
