Why cant I wear earrings anymore?

Seems too trivial to go to the GP about. I have tried every so often over the last few months to wear earrings but over the course of the day I end up having to take them out as it itches and feels a bit sore on one ear.
The same ear has a few small bumps half way down just where the ear meets my face which seem to have been there for teh same time period.

Any ideas on what it is and/or what I can do?

Yes. I had this. It's to do with the skin in your ear, it gets lumps of hard gristle in. The answer is to have your ears repierced.

rainbowinthesky · 03/09/2010 20:23

REally? The lumps are not near the holes but about halfway up where my ear meets my face so quite far away.

If they are hard, they are gristle. Sorry, not very glamourous. Mine were a few centimetres north of the hole and what was happening was the earring was stretching the skin and pressing on them - which was bloody sore and itchy after a bit.

Does it feel better about ten minutes after taking out the earrings?

rainbowinthesky · 03/09/2010 20:31

Yes, it does! It's the actual hole that is sore.

How did you find out this was the problem?

I've been prodding and pulling my ear since posting my op and my ear is feeling rather warm now!

Asked my GP. Luckily he's a mate so he didn't laugh much at my lumpen ears. Try to make sure your new hole is in the fattest bit of your lobes and in the centre. You might want to let the original hole heal up first. New holes have no problems whatsoever.

It might be a nickel allergy, with glands reacting? (just something else for consideration)

rainbowinthesky · 04/09/2010 08:18

Thanks- I have wondered this too but it's only happening in one ear and my ears have been pierced for over 20 years.

Can be a nickel allergy. I was fine for years, then bought some earrings which gave me bumps on one side only. My gold and silver ones are fine, and the bumps went when I stopped wearing costume jewellery earrings with nickel in them.

I agree, sounds like an allergy. Have you tried delicateearrings.co.uk for earrings made from medical titanium or surgical stainless steel. I had the same problem but with these I can now wear lots of pretty earrings again.
