Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and pregnancy - advice needed!!

I posted in pregnancy but understandably no one responded as I hadn't heard of it before either!!

A good friend and her newborn have been diagnosed as having CMV. I haven't seen her for ages as we now lie miles away, but she is going to be in the area and keen to meet up. I am 34 weeks pregnant, and apparently other pg friends have avoided seeing her because of the CMV.

I would love to catch up with her but don't want to put myself or baby at risk - but from what I have read it would need to be close contact anyway to transmit?

Anyone with any experience or advice out there?!!

It only lasts a few days, iirc...and the chance of catching it is low, as you say. Plus, the odds are quite high that you're already immune - most adults have had it already!

Why don't you ask her what the doctors told her about infection risks? I wouldn't mind at all, if I were her, and she will know how long she's had it etc.

I gave blood in the US a few years ago and was identified as never having had CMV. This was apparantly quite rare. Almost all adults have had CMV and are immune. So the chances are you have had it and are immune.

Thats not much help but its all I know!
