Can you ahve a crown fitted without root canal treatment or do the two go hand in hand? I seem to have little recall about what my Dentist told me as I went into a stupid panic - any advice gratefully received

You certainly can have a crown without a root filling.

However often a root filled tooth would then have a crown put on it.

Also crowning a non root filled tooth increases the likelihood of that tooth needing a root filling in the future - god that sounds very confusing!

Just to complicate things even more - if its a post crown not a normal crown then it HAS to have a root filling first :)

If any of this makes sense and you have any more questions I'm here to help!
