Has this happened to anyone else?

Was there something else wrong? Did you have any more painful episodes? Or was it OK after that?

I was very ill, infection indicated in blood tests, very high temperature and painful tummy in all the right places for an appendix.

It is all just so strange..

they told me it was quite common

Have you had any of the same episodes since it was removed?

champagnesupernova · 30/07/2010 19:02

I had my appendix out adn then got fat
They didn't tell me if there was anything wrong with it afterwards - I assumed there was.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 30/07/2010 19:03

I had mine taken out aswell, there was nothing wrong with it. I get pain alot in my back around the muscles so they now automatically give me antibiotics for a UTI (no other symptoms of a UTI though).

The ovaries are in the same place as the appendix, have you ever been given an ultrasound to check for a cyst?

HumphreyCobbler · 30/07/2010 19:03

It only happened on tuesday night

I will be bloody pissed off if I get fat - I have spent AGES getting relatively thin!

I thought I had a UTI when I went to the doctor, but they said no. Perhaps that was it.

Thanks for your replies.

Ask them to do an ultrasound, if it's a burst cyst on your ovary it will show up, appendicitis will also show up as free fluid. A UTI shows up as protein in the urine as well as pain and fever, a UTI normally starts with cystitis.

HumphreyCobbler · 30/07/2010 19:18

Thanks for that, I certainly will.

Are you feeling better now? Did they remove your appendix?

HumphreyCobbler · 30/07/2010 19:26

I feel much better thanks. They took it out on Tuesday night, I just read the letter they give you to give to the GP and it said "No pus or fluid. Appendix grossly normal"

Ah right. If it's settled down then just see how things go. It's possible that it was a cyst, they do normally go by themselves. Other then that there's not alot there, you could have had an infection, the appendix has glands around it aswell so the pain could have come from a gland.

DoNotFeedMeBiscuits · 30/07/2010 21:02

It's very common. Difficult to differnetiate clinically between appendicitis, twisted ovarian cyst and a few other things. Ultrasound scans don't always help as they don't reliably diagnose appendicitis in all cases and seeing an ovarian cyst doesn't mean that there isn't also a problem with the appendix.

In the situation that you describe, with pain in the right area, high temp, and abnormal blood tests, the standard thing to do is to remove the appendix - at least you know it isn't that if it happens again - Even if your appendix looks normal at operation it is always still removed as it's a useless anatomical remnant, and you will have an appendicectomy scar, so doctors examining you in the future will assume that you don't have an appendix!

DoNotFeedMeBiscuits · 30/07/2010 21:03

Oh, and your appendix definitely doesn't stop you getting fat - the PP can't blame her appendicectomy for that!

HumphreyCobbler · 30/07/2010 23:37

Thank you DoNotFeedMeBiscuits, all very useful information and a great relief about the weight issuem

Mesenteric Adenitis - it is like a tonsil in the abdomen. Dd2 has had 2 stays in hospital being 'observed' with it, as it is similar in presentation to appendicitis. They did a scan the second time which showed the swollen gland, but no appendix - apparently they can hide!

zazen · 30/07/2010 23:50

Massage you scar, and don't worry about eating healthily. There is no reason for you to put on weight - other than crispy creme donuts.

katiestar · 31/07/2010 21:19

i read somewhere that 50% of time where appendicitis is suspected and the operation done, the appendix is found to be fine.
