Odd (nice) side effect of anti-biotics

KatyMac · 27/07/2010 09:06

DH is on permanent anti-biotics

He just found an abscess in his mouth,he says it isn't hurting him

He doesn't need to go to the dentist as the dentist could only give him a smaller dose of what he is already taking

How odd

Thing is if he is on long term antibiotics any infection which does manage to develop despite the antibiotic he is on has a high chance of being resistant to that particular antibiotic.
Also I don't think dental abscess is always just a matter of antibiotics, it could be some underlying problem with a tooth which does need to be checked out by a dentist.

belgo · 27/07/2010 10:15

he should see the dentist anyway for an abcess.

Flighttattendant · 27/07/2010 17:04

Yes it needs seeing to properly.

Antibiotics aren't always indicated for a dental abscess, but dental surgery IS iyswim

It can be very dangerous if left.

Anyway how does he know it's an abscess - usually they're not visible?

KatyMac · 27/07/2010 17:45

Well we guess it's an abscess; it's a large tender lump on his top gum

He made an appointment next week - the dentist wasn't that worried

My daughter, aged 3, is just recovering from chicken pox. Her rash first showed up 9 days ago.I have a son who is 14 months and I was expecting him to get it too but as yet no signs. However, he does have a bit of a cold - runny nose. As I have a bit of a cold too he may just have got this from me.

How likely is it that he will get it. They are in close contact and I was sure he would have it too. It may sound cruel, but in a way I would like him to have it to get it done and dusted.

What experiences have you had?

Cillapops · 04/08/2010 14:52

Sorry I am such a numpty, I need more practice. Will post in the right place. Ignore me!

KatyMac · 04/08/2010 21:45

Oh, KatyMac, he has my sympathy - I had two root canals done recently, and had to have them done privately. It hurt my wallet more than my mouth, TBH.....

KatyMac · 04/08/2010 21:50

We are private too, ouch
