pain in left hip travelling down leg

Title says it all: for the past week I've got a pain in my left hip (on the joint where the hip meets the leg). It's not as bad in the mornings, and not as severe every day, but for the past couple of days in the evening I can hardly walk. It travels down my leg (outside).
I had a knee injury whilst skiing over the Easter holidays, but that was on the other leg.
Will call my GP tomorrow, to aim for an appointment on Thursday or Friday, but was wondering: Is this something the GP can help with, or am I likely to be sent home with Ibuprofen (which I have been taking already)?

This sounds like sciatica. Usually caused by degeneration in the discs in the lower back but can also result from walking in an abnormal way and shifting the weight onto your other leg to take the strain off the bad knee. If your knee injury has taken a few weeks to resolve this is the most likely scenario. Your GP may offer physio but often with a long waiting list.

I dont know much about alternative therapies but I would look into osteopathy or chiropractors after getting a diagnosis from your GP. An Alexander technique therapist will re teach your body to walk etc in a normal way again as you may have retained the abnormal gait following your knee injury. Yes you will get anti inflammatories!

You should also ensure you dont wear high heels for a while, sit with good posture and a supportive chair, lift bending knees etc (all back care)

thanks for your reply, beammeupscotty.
thought it might be sciatica. i'll update once i've spoken to my gp.
thanks also for the alternatives to physio. it shouldn't be such a long wait though, as i had some physio for my knee, and was told i could come back if needed.

Sciatica can be aggravated by an acid diet look at yr intake of vinegar, oranges, normal tea coffee and alcohol etc. try taking quarter tsp bicarb of soda wt tabspoon lemon juice twice a day.

Also try eating fruit before a meal. The bicarb should also be taken on an empty stomach it does work by the way!
