Anyone been prescribed movicol for chronic constipation in dd/ds?

How did you find it?

DD1 has been on lactulose for about 8months but still suffers badly. Saw a paed last week who put us onto movicol fulltime (we'd previously been advised to use it as a trouble-shooter only by our GP). Aside from the issue of getting it down her, so far it doesn't seem to be doing what it should be. Any ideas from other mums who've used this?
TIA

not sure if it is the same as coloxil but we went with lactulose with no result despite upping the dosage several times and then the coloxil also was no help, only thing that seems to have helped is we ended up in hospital for an enema for ds and continued on lactulose after this and this seems so far to be working, he is 11months and would go up to 16 days between motions.

my dd (3) just had a UTI and GP said she is constipated (gave her lactulose). I was v suprised as she eats such a good diet - loads of veg, fruit, only the occasional treats.

so am now scared it will be ongoing... worrying, isn't it?

Horrid for them, yes.

Paed said often it can be more or less unrelated to diet. We do all the right things - lots of f and v, drinks lots of water, very active etc. Having said that, I'm sure its espevially bad at the mo cos we were at Disney last week and ate all the junk and almost nothing healthy. (Nothing there was healthy!) Normally I'm paranoid about keeping her f and v intake high!

Hope your dds resolves itself quickly.

Sassy - just seen this and thought I'd add my comments.
My dd was prescribed Movical by hospital paed and it did do the trick! She had suffered with constipation since a small baby. Lactulose and senna were useless. The movical was oiginally prescribed in a fairly high dose (4 sachets per day). We found by adding 2 sachets at a time to a cup of cranberry & apple juice we could usually get her to take it. The higher dose "cleared her out" and was then reduced to a daily dose of 1 sachet per day for about 3 months. During this time we decided to potty train her (she was 2 years 9 mnth). We had delayed potty training because of the constipation. The combination of Movical and potty training really seems to have fixed her as she started pooing every day - and is now off the Movicol and doing fine. I had to put her back on it for a week when she became constipated again but I really think it worked for her. How are you getting on now?

My dd (now 4 1/2) has been on Movicol for a long time now (probably coming up 12m). She had chronic constipation and tried all the usual lactulose, ducolax, senna - and between not taking the medication bacause it was YUK (!!) despite disguising it in everything and anything, to it simply not having the desired effects, the paed suggested MOVICOL. The intention with this is to encourage a regular motion, and at the same time hopefully sending the correct signals to the brain to enable this to happen naturally.
Now decreased dosage to 1 satchet every 2 days still doing ok! Bit dubious to reduce any further as she just started scholl and emotional strain can cause her to go backwards. I was advised not to hurry the weaning off process - as this is a common mistake made by many GP's.
Stick with it - I'm sure it will work.

Movicol is the only thing that has helped ds2 so far, tho it does take a few days to work on him.

joec · 19/09/2005 16:56

hi, my ds2, is 15months and has basically been constipated from about 5 months, has lactulose everyday but doesnt really work. tried all the usual the same as you all.
havent heard of movical before can you only get it on prescription?
