My mum has type 2 diabetes. (diagnosed 10 years ago or so). She's just had a tooth out, and a few days after the extraction had to go to GP as still in a lot of pain and is now on antibiotics. She's had a funny turn today, her blood sugars are 15.8, so we've spoken to her GP who said not to worry about the 15.8, that's quite normal in type 2 diabetics. If you are diabetic, would you be concerned with this reading? - I thought between 4-8 was considered "normal"?

From what I know/have read, diabetics need to be even more careful with denal hygiene, are more prone to infection, can take longer for their body to fight an infection in the body, and can have elevated blood sugar levels due to the infection. I thought the GP might have wanted to see her, but he's just said not to worry.

any thoughts if this was you? TIA.

As a one-off reading 15.8 isn?t disastrous, and could be caused by the antiobiotics themselves, but it?s certainly elevated and if it?s like that for any length of time it?s not good for your mother. High blood sugars will also lengthen the time taken to heal.

I would definitely be concerned about a GP who considers a reading that high to be quite normal and would be seeking a second opinion.

Hope your mum feels better soon.
