General election 2024

Labour's Gender policy

I absolutely cannot vote for this:

Labour has promised to reform the UK Gender Recognition Act, which enables adults to achieve legal recognition in their acquired gender with an official recognition document and change their recorded sex on their birth certificate.
Labour argues that it is “intrusive and outdated” and has promised reform to “remove indignities for trans people”.
If elected, Labour says the aim is to make the process less bureaucratic with one specialist doctor rather than two involved in the assessment.

Why oh why should we make it easier for men to be able to produce a birth certificate that says they're women? This is nuts!

And also extend the conversion therapy ban. To do anything other than affirm a gender questioning child will be seen as conversion therapy.

Don't then.

BiggerBoat1 · 13/06/2024 18:32

Ok then so vote for someone else 🤷🏼
I am really impressed with what they are saying and hoping for a Labour Government

CharlotteSometimes1 · 13/06/2024 18:35

I’ve voted Labour all my life, I’ve been a member on and off but this is a massive no for me, what do I do? Will never vote Tory, Lib Dem and Greens are even worse on the safety of women and girls.

YellowHairband · 13/06/2024 18:37

And yet we still need two doctors to sign off an abortion.

NorthUtsireSouthUtsire · 13/06/2024 18:38

I am GC but also know there are bigger issues..

If it's a red line issue you will have to vote for another party, spoil your ballot or not vote.

Frosty1000 · 13/06/2024 19:10

There are more important issues than this that needs addressing and the election is not a one policy thing.

But if this is your view then don't vote for them.

If you have an SDP candidate they’re against gender woo.

40somethingme · 13/06/2024 19:12

Don’t vote for them then -they are going to win the election regardless of how you vote.

OP

Great post.
Stand up and be counted. As Labour is clearing not interested in you as there not enough votes, you should have stood as an MP or got a friend to do that

TBH, no offence as honesty is the best policy, in the scheme of things, EG Putin praying for a weak and feeble government that will banish our nuclear deterrent, I am more worried about that and been done over by more taxes just because we worked hard and own our own property etc

I'm not sure if you own a property or two but save a few quid for the council tax reviews - it will hit EVERY banding, trust me and will have new, higher banding that will be reviewed every 2/3 years

Therefore, I am with you on the gender stance but in all honesty, and I've not had an honesty bypass like post politicians, there are far more important things to consider

Yes but they’re also against single parents and divorce.

PuffyFluffin · 13/06/2024 20:32

There's no SDP where I live.

For those who don't see the gender issue as important, or feel there are more important things to worry about, this is in my top 3 and with Labour's manifesto today I need to find someone else to vote for. It's so hard when none of them can be trusted 😟

So I need one more doctor to remove a bunch of unwanted cells from my body than I do to re write history and change legal documents? Fuck that and the horse it rode in on.

I genuinely don't know what to do on voting day.

ByJoyousAquaOtter · 13/06/2024 21:05

Is there much reason to think that dropping from 2 doctors to 1 doctor would cause a significant uptick in the number of GRCs being issued? (Genuine Q). There’s already a 96% approval rate.

To correct myself a little, it does look like the approval rate dropped last year (to 86%) after a jump in the number of applications (55 last year compared to ~30 in preceding years).

I guess that jump is from when the Tories made the application process a lot cheaper and more simple.

pointythings · 13/06/2024 21:12

Labour are proposing to fully decriminalise abortion. That's far more important to me than the gender stuff.

And I haven't even started on workers' rights and rape courts.

VinnieVanDog · 13/06/2024 22:13

Bearing in mind that at one time Labour (and Tories under Theresa May I think?) were promoting a policy of Self Id I actually think this a clever way to backpedal from that position.

Lifelikinotdothinki · 13/06/2024 22:16

Yes this issue will stop me from voting for Labour.

Is that in the manifesto?
