Researching my family tree, I was surprised to find I'm related to Florence Nightingale and Brian Blessed. Who'd have put those to in the same tree? Any of you discovered any little surprises?

What an interesting thread!

I haven't researched my family tree, so I wouldn't know. This has galvanized me into thinking about it, though.

I am rather proud of my Great Uncle Bill, who escaped from a German POW on a motorbike, and survived the war (though died of melancholy shortly afterwards). It's no surprise that The Great Escape is my favourite film.

They pulled all his finger nails out, whilst conscience! Gladly, he did not divulge anything.

Poor boy.

Well my grandfather recieved an OBE and I do wonder if my grandmother had any relation to JM Barrie, as her middle name is Barrie and came from similar area..... not been able to find out though.

Would LOVE to do a Who do you think you are kinda thing!

NoNickname · 08/01/2009 13:47

I've traced most lines of my tree back to the 1600/1700s, and have hundreds of ancestors, but not one of them is famous! Boo.

moshie - I also love Deanna Durbin. I have a permanent search on to automatically record her in anything (TiVo), but it's never found anything in the past 9 or 10 years

Kateaw · 08/01/2009 14:26

Dorothy L Sayers (writer)
Robertson Hare (actor)
Raymond Baxter (TV presenter)

Sadly no one who is still alive except my uncle the OBE, who's been on TV a few times as an expert geologist.

My mum's from the aristocracy you know. Lots of Earls, Lords, Royals and the like in there. Apparantly one of the lions in Trafalgar Square is one of my ancestors, as is Tolstoy.

Dp's 2nd cousin x removed played a consultant in Holby City last year, and apparently he is quite famous. (Joseph's Dad, who was having an affair with his son's fiancee - she's the mean one with a crutch) Talking of which, I went to school with the anaesthetist on Holby City, and her imdb database thing says she is 3 years younger than she is!!!

So how did you all find these fascinating connections? I'm trying to research my family for my son & wife who are expecting their first (the family tree suggests that she will be human) and finding it hard going--

FlowChart · 08/01/2009 20:03

illegitimate fly-blow of the Earl of Sefton, apparently.

liahgen · 08/01/2009 20:05

My cousin is Shaun Pulfrey who was on dragons den when he invented the Tangle Teaser.

He is a celebrity coularist (sp) to Victoria Beckham amongst others.

mrspnut · 08/01/2009 20:27

Interesting Flowchart

My great, great grandfather was the illegitimate child of the Earl of Mexborough and that's how we came by the surname we have.

Tom Baker is my cousin's godfather, not a relative but really lovely.
