Anyone tried this and have any issues with it? Can you use it for seven days only (I just need to check a handful of things, like police service records) then cancel before being billed, or do you have to at least pay for one month? It's quite a pricey one and I'm trying to cut back at the minute.

Do you know if they offer full access for the 7 days, or is access limited to certain records?

LizzyEm · 11/10/2025 18:07

It's full access for 7 days, no issues cancelling, you can cancel straight away for it to end on the 7 days. I did it a week or so ago.

Says it's full access.
But- a small number of exclusive records excluded (bet it's the ones I need).
And limited to one family tree import - not worried about that.

I'm confused because you can cancel after 7 days, but it also says you will be billed for the first paid month on 18 October which is...7 days from now. So as far as I can see, payment of some sort seems unavoidable. Is there any way round this @LizzyEm ? It's nearly £25 a month!

I signed up without giving payment details I think and then set it to cancel half hour later. Actually maybe I did put presaved info in with the view to appealing if they billed me actually.

I thought I had full access? I found what I needed anyway, but I also signed up to genealogy and got slightly different info from there too.

Both had no issues with the cancellation.

I got a bit confused with this a few months ago so didn't do the free trial instead I go to the local library and use it as and when.

Not specific to that trial, but a useful way of dealing with similar online ‘trials’ and avoiding unexpected recurring payments is to use an online card account such as Revolut etc

I have one setup (under a free promotion at the time) which gave me one physical card, and disposable virtual cards.
I’ve used it as a way of paying to less well known websites etc
I just transfer in an amount of money, enable a virtual card, pay, freeze the card
Then if it tries to make an unexpected payment it fails and I get an alert

Do all libraries have access to FMP @columnatedruinsdomino ? I know that many have Ancestry, but I have that anyway.

I don't know if they all have it, the ones I have been to have the 'Library' edition which gives me everything I want apart from some newspaper access. Just log on to a computer with your id and the home page will have the icon if they have it. I don't think you need to set up an account once in FMP.

AInightingale · 12/10/2025 08:57

I'll try that @columnatedruinsdomino thanks.

Um well, my library didn't have free FMP or Ancestry access, as far as I could tell (N Ireland - our library budget is cut to the bone) so I decided to risk it and take the 7-day FMP free trial. That was last Monday, and it seems to have allowed me to cancel today, and my account balance stands at £0.00. I hope they don't try to take a sneaky first month payment tomorrow - I'll remove my card details as a precaution. It was very useful and I was able to download what I needed from the news archive and Nat Archive police records, so pleased with that.
