Is there anyone with a British Newspaper Archive subscription who would be willing to do a quick look-up?

If so, it would be very much appreciated! I've just let my subscription lapse as finances are currently tight and naturally I have since come across a record that might be very helpful in pinpointing a census shy ancestor...

Search criteria is as follows:

"John Smyth" + Place: Batley

It brings up an article in the Batley Reporter and Guardian on Saturday 1 February 1879 with the snippet "Anyone returning it to John Smyth, Suothill, will rewarded" - from which I infer that John Smyth of Soothill had lost something...

I suspect the transcription will be very short.

Thank you so much in advance :-)

I can't upload anything to mumsnet for some reason, but it says: 'LOST, a white Ponarda dog, at Soothill, Batley, last Saturday, January 25th, answers to Toby. Anyone returning it to John Smythe, Soothill, will be rewarded.'

(I have a one month subscription atm.) Now you just need to figure out what a Ponarda dog might be!

Thank you so much! And as for what on Earth a "Ponardo" dog is, it figures there would be another mystery with this guy. The only thing I know for sure about him is that he lived briefly in Soothill (and, thanks to you, that he lost his dog 😅)

Trying to see if I can screen shot it for you...

Nope, seems I can't

Trying by adding it as a saved image...
