Does anyone know how to identify a police officer by his rank number?

I have found a wonderful photo of a member of my family. Well, I assume that he is a member of our family from around the 1930s.

I’d love to know who he is. He’s wearing a police uniform and has a number of 891.

Does anyone know how to identify him?

Most constabularies keep full records, so you could call their general headquarters number and ask for Archives.

What part of the country is this likely to be? Am trying to ID the force crest on his custodian helmet.

The collar number alone won't ID him, as each force has its own system.

The band on his left wrist shows he was on duty. The helmet type with the lack of other markings on his uniform means he was almost certainly a Constable.

It would most likely have been London because that’s where my family lived - this is the back of a different photo of him, same sort of time.
I can’t read the handwriting other than the date

Can also see the family resemblance. Would love to put a name to his face.

I've the opposite my grandad was an inspector in the met but I don't know his collar number . I'm going to contact the museum
