Is anyone watching? I'm confused how Harold wasn't called up to war as was a minor but had an 8 year old? Thought they were called up from 18 plus?

Not watched it but Was it becuase he was a miner rather than a minor? My grandad never got called up as he was a plumber, they needed some men left behind to keep things going

Yes a miner!!

There was a long list of reserved occupations, critical for the war effort. Lots of the guys who worked in the Glasgow shipyards were reserved occupations, doctors, teachers, farmers etc.

Reserved occupations were not a simple military service exemption - they were jobs that need to continue being done. Farmers were needed to farm, miners to mine, doctors to treat the sick. Not to work in shipyards.

Ah, sorry, on re-reading I think you mean shipyard workers were in reserved occupations, and so were the others. Not that the doctors were working in the shipyard.

Yes definitely a Miner. DGF worked in the Mines during WWII. Think he might have had an 8 yo at the time too Grin
