Hello,

My Father was born in Cork,1967, in a Mother and Baby home, I have tried to Google for a list of homes in Cork in the 60’s but the only one that comes up is Bessborough, I am so desperately looking for any information, was this the only Mother and Baby home, if anyone has any information they can share it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you x

This is such a hard to research area of genealogy for two reasons - first it was cloaked in secrecy at the time with lots of records destroyed or never kept in the first place, and each home was operating under its own rules. Secondly, the 1960s isn't that long ago in genealogy terms, there are much stricter rules about accessing information about living people, or those born under 100 years ago.

Id advise looking for a facebook group or similar based on that specific home, or Irish mother and baby homes in particular. This is a very specialised area of research and you need some Irish research experts to help you.

Bessborough was the big Mother and Baby home near Cork City.
If your father was in Bessborough for more than 6 months I think he is entitled to financial compensation.
Google The Adoption Authority of Ireland or email Tusla as they can get the information you/he will need.
It's a good time to be looking as things have opened up in the last few years.
Just 45 years approximately behind British legislation on getting your original Birth Certificate 🙄
A close relative had years of searching.
Best of luck.
