Just thought I would post a heads up about a new service from GRO

www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp

You can buy instant access to images of registers of births from 1837-1922 and deaths from 1837-1887 for £2.50 each. Huge discount on ordering even a pdf copy

I am going to order a few today. Often death certificates hold the most interesting research on an ancestor. I think this is quite a game changer for genealogy research as the cost can be prohibitive.

Thank you!

It;s brilliant that the GRO are offering this service! Really useful and makes things a lot quicker too.

Oh, that's good to know. That's the next few rainy weekends accounted for...

Thanks OP. I’m really hoping that they extend the dates you can get certificates for. But even if they don’t, it’s still really good.

Apparently the GRO are limiting to 100 year rule for births for privacy, so that will likely increase each year as 1922 now.

There isn't a legal reason for the death entries but I have read they have been scanned up to 1957 but no information on when the range to access immediate online will be extended.

With Scottish BMD on Scotland's People you can access births after 100 years, deaths after 50 years and marriages after 75 years online. Anything more recent has to be ordered as a hard copy.

Would imagine the GRO will be similar.
