What would have happened to her pre nhs, she died 1937 after the work houses closed and seems to have died in a hospital. I believe there was some shame around this hospital being named as it’s on the site of a former workhouse, so the coroner has just recorded the address, not the name of hospital.

There were hospitals pre-nhs accessible to people who couldn’t pay. I did some work on a man who had numerous, expensive brain operations in the early 1930s, no way would he have been able to fund those and lengthy hospital stays.

if you know where she was treated then you may be able to access her medical file. But ovarian cancer is one which can be hard to detect, it’s quite possible that she was in the very advanced stages before she knew what was wrong. And by that stage, there was nothing they could do.

Thank you a genie. She was buried in a paupers grave, so they definitely wouldn’t have had the money for treatment.
Felt sad for her suffering with no treatment, but sounds like she would have had some care in a hospital.

From 1920 the term workhouse was no longer used on death certificates because of the stigma. Same for births from 1904 (?) Non inmates could still use the hospital.

The hospital was on the site of former workhouse. I believe from a bit of research that there was stigma about going into a hospital during this time, because a lot of hospitals evolved from workhouses. On the death certificate it just gives the address of the hospital, not the name because of the stigma.
