Is there anyone in NI who could search for a birth please?

Hi,
I'm really struggling to find the birth information of my father. I know he died here in Manchester but haven't been able to find his birth at all.

Through Ancestry and bits of information gathered we think he could have been born in Belfast, but can't access any information from here. I'm not sure how searchable records are in NI but was wondering if there is anyone in NI that would be able to help please🙏
Thank you.

I'm not sure either. I'm from NI. I know someone who researched their family tree so I could ask. It might take me a few days to speak to her.

That would be very much appreciated if you're sure you don't mind😊😊
Thank you so much

Look up PRONI the public records office of NI. Has the 1901 and 1911 census records and also lots of church registry documents. Can begin your search online and hopefully find a lead of some kind!

Hallmark1234 · 19/08/2022 22:33

Unlike in England and Wales, you can't access BMD registers online, for records under 100 years old.

As PP said go onto the PRONI website, register and giving as much information as possible, ask them to do a search for you.

I have ordered my father and grandfather's birth certificate, but I did know their dob and other information.

Update the lady I know is abroad on holidays, I'll check on her return.

LadyEloise1 · 23/08/2022 09:44

What year was he born ?
Ireland was divided in 1921.
Pre 1921 the records are probably in Dublin.
But many records were lost as buildings holding them were burned out in the Irish Civil War of 1922.

Could you justify a trip to Belfast and include a visit to the PRONI Office ( if he was born after 1921 ) ?
Lots to see in Belfast. Well worth a trip.

Hi
Thanks for reply 🙂
As far as I know he was born 1935,this is from his death record. I know which line of family he comes from and where they are from and most still live mainly Dublin,Tullermore,Laois...but they can't find his birth either.
Just can't find how he fits into that line. The only person with same surname as him married and ended up a soldier in Belfast so Wondering if that's where he was born.
We are considering going over at some point if I can't find anything

If he was born in 1935, it really matters whether he was born in Northern Ireland or Ireland as they were different "countries" then. So completely different records.

That's the problem though I don't know which one he was born in🤣 no trace at all in Ireland, but I know that doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't born there. Just need to access NI records next 👍

If you want to private message me with the name I'll see what I can find. I helped my dh discover a fair bit.
Both in NI and the Republic.
Are you on Ancestry DNA?

LadyEloise1 · 23/08/2022 17:07

We went up to the PRONI office in Belfast. and were able to get birth and marriage certs.
It took a wee while to search.

Countmeout · 23/08/2022 18:03

General register office NI has the birth certificates for that date I believe.

@Tacsi start with the GRO for Northern Ireland in that link. With his full known name and year of birth range, you should get some results .

it's free to search and you pay a small fee to read the information.
