Do you feel more strongly connected with one part of your tree?

I feel more strongly connected to my gran’s family tree/ancestors, as I was close with my gran. They also interest me more from an historical perspective, and were poor and very gaelic.

My husband says that he feels more drawn to his direct paternal line, as that’s where his surname comes from and so he feels those ancestors are a bigger part of him than others. Although I do wonder if it’s more to do that they were middle class, and he has delusions of grandeur as they say Grin

Not one part in particular, but I am more attached to individuals whose stories I have been able to explore in more detail.

My dad's side has been easier to trace though, due to an unusual surname.

It depends on what I am researching at any particular time. My Mum and I started researching together; she then continued researching her side and I researched my Dad's side. I felt more 'connected' to Dad's side as I was doing the research, but Mum, being retired, had much more time to research, and has found a lot of interesting information about some of our ancestors. I wish I had more time to pursue my family tree (on both sides!)

There are particular stories that really stick with me. Especially if it's taken some work to find out. But it's illogical really - I have equally "weighted" relations I completely forget about!

ancestors - no

I'm very drawn to my kids though

I'm interested in my dad's mum's mum's side - if you can follow that. Criminal pasts and lots of illegitimacy- interesting.
Ultimately I've mainly found out a load of dates and names which is frustrating- would love to know more detail.

@IdblowJonSnow - have you looked into newspaper archives? usually newspapers are great to fill in lots of details about dodgy ancestors.
