Data protection in Germany predates the GPDR by years - when I was young there was an uproar because of a census.

Stems from the time our ancestors had to prove their ancestry to the regime four generations back.

Have you done a DNA test though? It may find some cousins which can give you a lead. Some of my matches are 2nd cousins.

Ancestry DNA

BramblyHedge · 02/07/2019 20:07

Also, if you get your mother to do it too, Ancestry will show which of your DNA matches you share...making it easier to work out which are your mum's side and which are your dad's.

It should also produce matches, on the quest for my maternal grandfather I got my mother to do ancestry dna. She had six second cousin matches, of which three had really good family trees and a fourth was very willing to help with practical research, photographs etc. Second cousins showed us which generation to look at, we narrowed it down fairly quickly. When ancestry introduced thrulines it was extremely useful for refuting or supporting various hypotheses by showing how my mother was likely related to her matches via various common ancestors. Ancestry also put her in an additional community of Swiss and German US settlers which showed us where to focus the search regionally. It really helped to keep it all on track!
