Old photos and Merchant seaman logs

My grandma passed away this month and i have inherited 2 suitcases jammed full of photos starting from the 1800's, some are tin and loads from the 30's and later. My great grandfather was a merchant seaman and i have all his travel documents, stamped books and photos from on the boats. It seems a shame to keep them to myself although i want to keep them for my children, is it something anyone, like a museum would be interested in, im not sure if they would be or not. I also have a book called Aristotles works which i have googled but have no idea what edition it is, im guessing it belonged to my great grandmother. I want to keep everything but would the photos, logs etc be of any importance to anyone else or are they something many people have kept. I am busy sorting eveything out into acid free polly pockets to put into files as they have all just been stuffed in two suitcases since i was a child.

Most of the photos are named and dated with locations, is it advisable to scan everything and if i have names of people who are not family members is it advisable to somehow upload the pics and add their name in case someone is doing family history on this person. I dont have date of births but have some name's of work colleague and old friends i'm assuming, probably local to this area. Where would i put them? i have an ancestry account and a large tree i have spent 2 years working on

There may be a Maritime Museum near to you that would like your things. With regard to ancestry related photos, maybe post a thread on the forum if there is one - or try Roots.com

Ive had a look and it looks like the closest one is in Hartlepool, so i will give them a ring. Its trying to link the photos to a name so they are searchable, im not sure how i would do that. Maybe start a thread with area and list their names with the photo on one of the above sites. Seems a shame to have all these photos of people when their relatives might not have a photo of them
