powerpoint 2008 ... why is there nothing in my custom animation box?

Am trying to animate in 2008 for the first time ... but there is nothing in my custom animation box, and I can't find anyway to get stuff 'in' there.... help please??

ignore me, just solved it (although seems like a huge faff to have to click everything in every time, so am I missing something?)
