Netgear usually is a good make.
We found if we leave them on all the time they should be fine.
Ours is a Belkin atm.

do you mean leave the laptop on all the time
I don't turn the router off

Get a wired one there is no such thing as a secure wireless network, I know many wifi hijackers, there isn't many makes they all have pretty much the same companies components in em, Netgear are not a bad brand anyway.

I used to have a Netgear but it died recently. Have now got a Draytek and it has been fine so far - got good reviews in PC mags apparently so that's why DH bought it.

Mine is a Linksys and never had problems in the 3 or so years we've had it. Ebuyer is usually the cheapest place to get things like this as well.

liamsdaddy · 06/06/2010 11:24

Keeping losing connection isn't necessarily a fault with the router itself, there might be some noise source interfering - such as a neighbor starting a wifi network on the same channel.

In any case, ours is a Linksys WAG354G and it's been running for a good few years.

No I meant leave the router on all the time -- we used to turn ours off to save energy (overnight, when we went on holiday) and we had loads only last 6 months as a result. Irks me that we have to leave it on 24/7, but I guess that's what the sensitive electronics need to last at all.

Thats rubbish, I have a 7 year old wired Safecom which still works, it gets turned off when it's not in use and always has.

Just speaking to my experience, Ryoko!
3 houses in different towns, several different ISPs, lots of different brand routers and cable modems -- all of them died quickly if we turned them on and off daily; they started lasting years when we left them on all the time (starting about 4 years ago now).

Ours is Netgear. No idea how it compares to others and our connection can be crap sometimes. But, do find it improves if we unplug it when not in use

Maybe there is something about wireless ones, or your electricity isn't that great and keeps spiking
