Dark photos on mac min - please help

I have a mac mini and use the television as a monitor. I am very happy with the mac but for one thing:when i upload photos from with my camera or my iphone they appear really dark in iphoto. I then have to edit them all manually, and i'm pretty rubbish at that so they all end up a mess. The photos look fine on my camera and iphone.

i have the same problem when watching DVDs - the are really dark but i can brighten them by clicking on Window/Video Colour.

I've searched on the web and found other people complaining about this but haven't been able to understand the advice given (i'm afraid i don't understand much, other than what i do on a day to day basis). One person said that they had made an adjustment to contrast via System preferences / Universal Access, but when i tried this i found that it was already set to 'Normal' and any adjustment made the screen even darker.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Can you get hold of a "normal" computer monitor to see what it all looks like then? Mac minis are pretty portable so you could take it to someone else's place and try. Then you'd know if the settings were basically OK and just need tweaking for your TV, which is probably what you need to do. "Displays"in System Preferences is likely to be where you'll fix it - just hit the "calibrate" button and answer the questions. But it would be good to try it out on a different monitor first.

Thanks for the reply. I could take it to my parents' and try their monitor. I have tried calibrating as you suggested a couple of times and it died 't see
to have made a difference.

I love the mac in many respects but i hate the way I don't know how to do anything with it (as I'm used to using windows for work).
