Virgin media mumsnet not working?

prefuse · 30/04/2010 13:40

Hello,

I have recently switched to virgin cable for broadband. Facebook stopped working and a Google reveals this is a common problem and has been for some time with Virgin - put down to routing trouble. Bollocks.

Now mums net is doing the same, had to switch the router over to our ADSL service to get on.

Too much of a coincidence are Virgin ruddy well blocking particular website for either political / monetary reasons or just plain fuckying aboutness as some tit decides what we can and can't see?!

Argh.

No, Virgin are, IME, fucking brilliant! Ring them up and see what's going on. I have access to everything I want to so far today. It's something random. I've never had an ounce of trouble with our account in 7 years of having it.

BlackYellowRed · 30/04/2010 13:42

Never had trouble on Virgin Media broadband here.

bruffin · 30/04/2010 13:51

No problems with Virgin either

coppertop · 30/04/2010 14:01

I've never had a problem with accessing websites with Virgin. Mumsnet and FB always work (unless the actual sites themselves are down for maintenance or whatever).

toccatanfudge · 30/04/2010 14:03

Virgin Media broadband here too - no problems at all (and am on facebook and MN CONSTANTLY )

potplant · 30/04/2010 14:03

Slow down with the conspiracy theories.

I'm using Virgin media right now so it isn't blocking MN or FB. give em a ring.

paddingtonbear1 · 30/04/2010 14:05

I'm on Virgin media as well. No problems here! Just waiting for them to deliver the V+ box dh wanted!

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 30/04/2010 14:34

Virgin here too (as it were).

Deffo worth phoning, they are much better than they used to be.

prefuse · 30/04/2010 14:55

Are you all on adsl broadband though or cable / fibre broadband?

I have just switched to fibre and the problems have started.

I've gone to sign on facebook today and it told me that I was already signing up from IP address 62.30.249.131.

This isn't my IP so I did a reverse lookup - webcache3-know.server.virginmedia.net

A bit of time Googling and it appears this is a Virginmedia IWF censor proxy.

There's 3 of them

62.30.249.131
62.30.249.130
62.30.249.129

Never spotted these before.

I've had no end of bother with websites recently so it must be that. Cacheing doesn't work for any dynamic website and explain why content is visible and up to date one minute and disappears another.

Totally ruins sites like facebook which rely on having a proper internet connection.

Bugger

"Slow down with the conspiracy theories."

It's not out of the blue, they do throttle connections and block p2p etc. so it wouldn't be that out of the ordinary in some respects.

prefused I had this problem with Virgin a couple of months ago. The helpdesk were nice, but not much use tbh.

TomTech came like a knight in shining armour to my rescue and gave something a good prodding! here

Ivykaty44 · 30/04/2010 15:13

cable / fibre broadband here and not having propblesm

though I have my cahche really small and so my pc never stays logged inot mumsnet and I wonder if this helps me not have problems??

LostArtOfKeepingASecret · 30/04/2010 15:18

Not being a techey sort (I must remember to check the topics before posting) I didn't understand a word of your last post

I don't know if we have the same problem, but I had to use a poxy server to even see mumsnet for a while, all the time Virgin claimed it was nothing to do with them. My DH who is a bit of a tech said it was something wrong at their end. Nothing seems to work until Toms prodding and even then it took a while. HTH.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 30/04/2010 18:20

Cable connection here, checked my ip address and it's right, I am not going through a proxy (/poxy ) server.

Ex-telewest though, are you maybe ex-NTL? (if that might make a difference?)

LostArtOfKeepingASecret · 30/04/2010 21:15

Yeah, I'm ex-NTL.

at poxy, I knew it was proxy, honest!

paddingtonbear1 · 30/04/2010 23:23

This is interesting - I say I've not had problems, and I haven't with mn. But the odd time, facebook hasn't worked - I don't get any message, just a blank page! It's not happened today but it did several times a few days ago.

prefuse · 04/05/2010 08:33

Yes, I don't get a message, just page cannot be displayed. Other websites e.g. bbc and so on work fine at the same time.

Seems ok this morning.

I wonder if it's to do with the dynamic IP address? Could be fixed when I get a static IP later on this year.

Meh.
