Why is Microsoft Word 2007 giving me huge gaps between lines of text?

Just got Microsoft Word 2007. When I'm typing and hit return to start a new line it gives me an extra space between each line.

It's doing lines of

text like this

When I actually want
it like this. IFSWIM.

I've looked in paragraphs and formatting but can't find how I can get it to type text without huge white spaces between lines.

TIA.

Probably your linespacing.

On the Ribbon; Home tab third block over is the "Paragraph", there is a little button with blue up/down arrow and a block of lines. Check the setting there.

Check the spacing before and after paragraphs.

You could try pressing Ctrl + 1, just in case it's straightforward double line spacing.

Oh, and to see if there is anything weird like double enters- there is a paragraph marking tool in the same block. Looks like a backwards filled in heavy black P with another vertical to the right. If you click that on/ off it shows and hides all the hidden formatting in your document- things like enters, breaks and tabs. You need to click it off again though to hide that bit.

Look at the top, there's a box with letters in it that says 'normal'. That's the default spacing. It's a pita, because it automatically double spaces. Click the box next to it that says 'no spaces' That should sort it.

try shift + enter to create a new line rather than just enter. this works for me, i have the same problem, but don't know why or how to cure it properly - hth

Meglet · 26/04/2010 21:25

I think it must be a double enter. When I get the backward P icon it only recognises every other line.

Line spacing options all look normal / auto / 0 etc.

oo too slow lol

Meglet - it's your line spacing you need to change the default. There's a couple of drop down boxes up on 'page layout' it's probably at 0.10pt giving you the double line spacing and you have to change it there to 0.0pt. 2007 defaults to double line spacing for some reason.

Drives me nuts.

Monty100 · 26/04/2010 21:41

Hmph! lol, too slow here too.

Ok, when I open a document in Word 2007, there's a range of tags across the top - the 'Home' one is highlighted. Then across the top it's clipboard/font/paragraph/styles/editing? The boxes that say normal/no spacing/heading1/heading2/title/subtitle are under 'Style' and usually it's the normal box that's highlighted with a yellow border. (I have Office Word 2007 from the Home and Student pack if that's relevant?)

serenity · 26/04/2010 21:42

Xpost, you found them!
