really stupid iphone question

I can't get my ringtone switched on for incoming calls!
The ringer volume is turned up, I have been into 'settings' and as far as I can see it should work, but I am still silent!
Please can anyone help?

Probably a really stupid answer, but have you checked the mute switch (just above the volume control) If there's a red dot showing, the sound is off.

Is the little button on the side (above the volume control) showing a red dot?
If so, push it across and the sound will be on

Ahhhh, yes! Isn't mumsnet wonderful?
But how on earth was I supposed to work THAT out? I assumed that since the volume was fine when I had ipod or iplayer on, then it must be ok!
