Help with Hotmail - Missing Emails?

MissWooWoo · 15/04/2010 12:40

Hi

god knows how to word this so bear with me:

how can I check to see if emails that have supposedly been sent to me have been "rebuffed" by hotmail? Could it be a memory thing despite the fact that most emails are getting through.

Example 1 - my dp was sent an email from a private account to his work address he then forwarded it to my personal email account (hotmail) and it never arrived - he tried again but to no avail. I have no problem receiving emails from him usually.

Example 2 - I recently switched energy suppliers online and never received the confirmation email ... I have rung them and they couldn't confirm whether it had been sent (wrong dept or something) but could confirm that they had my details and everything else was fine

Example 3 - A friend sent an email with some pictures of his new baby, I never got it. I asked another friend to forward the email and he tried to do this twice. In the end I had to email him and he "replied to sender" with an attachment

Example 4 - I signed up for a discount on my first order with an online store, I never recieved the confirmation email to click onto so I have not been able to claim the discount

What's going on and how can I sort it?

thanks

Have you checked the Spam folder? Sometimes things get sent there automatically.

There should be some kind of indicator showing whether your memory is full. If it's close to capacity, it could be why some emails are being rejected. Photos and videos can hog a lot of space so save what you want to your computer and delete them from your email.

Make sure your Deleted Items folder is regularly emptied because these are still using up memory in your account. Also clear yuour Sent Items folder of anything you no longer need.

I found Hotmail very glitchy myself though - got one virus too many so I switched to Google Mail. It's got a bit of a funny layout but it's very good for filtering spam and I've not had a problem with it yet. And you get a huge 7444 MB of storage.

thanks for relplying in MrsLadywoman ... I have a junk folder and ther's nothing in there if that's what you mean re spam - infact I've had nothing make it in there for a very long time which is odd. I did have a virus (or somesuch) a few months back which sent a very odd email to most of my address book. It also moved all the contents of my address book into "recently sent". odd. I'm not sure where to look for memory but I could certainly clear some stuff out - I have oodles of sent emails

Hotmail used to be notorious for vanishing emails. The bottom line is they are a law unto themselves. If they decide an email is spam they can just quietly delete it. I don't know if they still do that, but I expect they do. I don't think it's a professional approach, but if you want professional then you probably shouldn't be using a free service.

It's important to remember that for a free service, you aren't the one paying the bills. Their real customers are the advertisers who pay for the service and your needs as a user come a very distant second.

You can get a paid for email service, with your own domain for less than £15 per year.

Having said all that, if you must use a free service Google Mail is probably the best. I personally wouldn't touch Yahoo or Hotmail.

Have you looked at your security settings in hotmail or the setting (which I can't remember what it is called) where you can automatically divert to different folders, you can also set it to automatically delete emails. Could these settings have been changed.

thanks bruffin - I've had a look at my settings and my junk folder was sent to delete immediately so that explains why I haven't had any junk! Used to be set to 10 days and this suits me more incase something is in there that isn't junk - I have all mail that isn't in my safe list sent there so now and again new contacts come through that won't be on the safe list. I've changed that setting back to keeping the junk for 10 days so I can see what comes in. Also binned a lot of stuff so hopefully that should help.

thanks all
