DD's love affair with Apple (Part 4) The iPad

Okay, so WTF is an iPad? Why should anyone be forking out for an iPad when they already have an iPod, an iPhone and a Mac. What does it do?

It sounds senseless in the context of all the other Apple gizmos ....

Think of it as an extra large Ipod Touch.

TheFallenMadonna · 12/04/2010 23:28

She's an expensive girl your DD. A Jack Wills habit and an ipad?

llareggub · 12/04/2010 23:29

Dunno, but the general consensus is that it is best to wait for the next generation of iPads before forking out.

Stephen Fry says that his iPad is just the right size to use on the treadmill.

I share your DD's love affair with all things Mac. I really struggled with my PC at work today; I've been on maternity leave for best part of a year and it really foxed me.

Quattrocento · 12/04/2010 23:38

Thanks all

I love the idea of having to wait for the next generation of iPads.

But she doesn't need it, does she? I mean need in a very relative rather than an absolute sense. It doesn't actually do anything that her current stable of gizmos don't already do? Or does it? After watching the adverts DD has been mailing me with hourly, it's hard to retain a grip on reality.

Tell me she doesn't need this thing (please)

Oh, TFM, have you met my DD? I think you must've done.

How old is she?

And no, she doesn't need an iPad!

retiredgoth2 · 12/04/2010 23:43

...I am an Apple geek par excellence..

(or so I thought)

...but cannot imagine why I would want an iPad.

It's a big iPhone.

But without the 'phone.

....why would I want such a thing?

(puzzled geek emoticon)

MinkyBorage · 12/04/2010 23:45

I want to be an apple geek, never really understood it until I got my iphone, and now I am a total convert! I want to break my recently purchased pc because it's all shit and un-appley

Quattrocento · 12/04/2010 23:45

RG!!

Thank you.

Does it sound like senseless spending? No need for it?

OP posts:
Quattrocento · 12/04/2010 23:48

Nooo - you don't want to be an Apple geek

Trust me

I am very unconvinced by the iPad concept.

...however my Special Friend has a wry bet that I will have bought one within six months..

I think this unlikely.

Yes.

Senseless spending.

BadgersPaws · 13/04/2010 09:45

Yes it is basically a big iPhone without the Phone, but that's the point, it's bigger....

Web browsing on an iPhone/iPod Touch is just about the best on any similarly sized gadget that I've ever used. However it's still a bit small, having the extra screen space would be very welcome indeed.

And then there are a few extra applications such as word processing, presentations and photo manipulation that the iPad can have (but I think you have to pay for) that the iPhone won't.

So there are differences, and I can see the appeal. I spend a lot of time at home quickly grabbing my iPod Touch to look things up (train times, cinema showings, who was who in some movie etc.) and having a bigger version that turns on just as quick would be great.

Is it hundreds of pounds of great? Well probably not to me, but that doesn't mean it's not good.

MmeLindt · 13/04/2010 09:52

I have been thinking about it because I use my iPhone a lot, and love it madly.

Buuuut.

I would want a 3G one with a decent amount of GB and that bumps the price up.

And I really wanted it as an alternative to the Kindle for reading eBooks, and have recently read that the platform for buying eBooks in Europe has not been set up yet.

I am waiting for the next generation.

BadgersPaws · 13/04/2010 10:56

For reading eBooks consider that an iPad has a battery life measured in in hours where as a Kindle's is measured in days or even weeks with the WiFi turned off.

PrettyCandles · 13/04/2010 11:05

Wait for at least the next generation. There are a lot of problems with the current one. It's almost as if Apple rushed to get it out before a comptetitor brought out something similar.

There are loads of reviews.

Quattrocento · 13/04/2010 22:11

Oh thank you all - much appreciated.

It's a big iphone.

It does what an iphone does except make calls and fit in a pocket.

It makes Steve Jobs even more rich and proves the point that he could slap an apple logo on a turd and it would still sell.
