XP malaware pop ups....anyone else getting them?

I freaked out earlier as I started getting all these pop ups from microsoft (apparently?) saying I should register with XP malaware or something similar, also saying my computer is infected. It said my firewall was off too?
I couldn't stop it so did a system restore and it's stopped now.
Anyone else had this? I don't know why it suddenly happened or what to do to prevent it?

Ssometimes if you click on a site, it comes up with this, sometimes with a picture of your drives saying it's infected. It comes up with a box giving you options of disinfecting or something else, anyway you can't get rid of it.

I've had this a couple of times when I've been looking for drivers for something. What I do is turn off the pc, then scan it thoroughly for viruses. Just don't accept any downloads or for it to check your pc.

It's probably just pop ups from a web site that are designed to look like Windows virus alerts.
