Hi, since I am useless at geeky stuff I was wondering if anyone could help!

I want to copy a DVD onto my hard drive and then back onto a blank DVD. Do I need software? How do I do this? etc etc......

Oh is it illegal if I own it but just want a copy?

The legality is questionable, copyright law as it stands says that you cannot make a copy.

Copying a CD to an iPod is theoretically illegal but the music industry has come out and said that it's not a problem.

I don't know if the movie industry has ever said the same thing.

I think it also makes a difference if you do a quite literal copy or if you have to crack the protection on the DVD (as you'd have to do to load it onto an iPod for example).

For example I know that DVD Shrink is illegal in Germany despite the law explicitly saying that you can make a backup as DVD Shrink cracks the DVD protection to do what it does.

Unfortunatly I'm pretty sure it is illegal, comes under 'Format Shifting' I believe..

Well I don't want to put it onto an ipod, just onto another DVD to put into a car player (don't want to get the original damaged).

I have copied music CDs lots of times for personal use. So I have to admit I thought it'd be straightforward to copy a DVD. But sounds a bit more complex (technically and legally) than I expected.

You need to decrypt the dvd before you can copy it. We have a dycrypter that was a free download we got off the net. Dunno whats its called and its on DH's PC downstairs and I am in bed.

Quite simple to use once you get your head round the whole thing

google dvd decrypter or buy dvd clone
