Argh - what have I done to my iphone apps? Syncing help needed...

Got an iphone last week. Loaded the game Tapfish (to play with the kids you understand) and together we had worked our way up to various levels and got three tanks full of fish.
Today I thought i would finally try and work out what this business of syncing with iTunes was all about. So I downloaded iTunes and plugged in the iphone. I now find I have erased all my stored data from Tapfish...
is there any way back?
And what is syncing all about anyway?
Please please help me as I don't know how I'm going to explain to dc2 that all our fish have vanished...

Syncing is quite literally keeping an iPhone/iPod in sync with a computer.

So it moves music, backs things up and can sync up data like your phonebook.

Quite why when you did it for the first time it lost your Tapfish saves is a very good question, it depends in part on what options you selected when you plugged the phone in for the first time after installing iTunes. Did you loose anything else?

Thanks for responding. I don't know if I lost anything else, not that I have noticed (though I haven't got anythign else to lose really!)
I just blindly followed the onscreen instructions, I had no idea what it was doing really!
(you have to understand I am a total virgin when it comes to downloadable media - i don't have any electronic music - except the album i managed to buy by mistake on the iphone )
