Has anyone got a Blu Ray player? Is it worth it?

Need an additional dvd player as my current one can't be made region free and I have tons of other region dvds. So, thought I might leap into the 31st century and get a BR player. So, is it worth it? Were you blown away by the clarity of Holly Willoughbooby's boobies or is it all a waste of effort?

Yes it's wonderful, if you have an HDTV - I don't know if you'd see the difference on other TVs or not, but it might not have as much of an impact.

We have a PS3 which has a built in Blu-Ray - that WAS worth it (and we have an HD TV now, but we could see the difference before we upgraded the TV)

Thanks, yes, have an HDTV. Hmm bugger, sounds like it is worth it. Was hoping you'd say it was rubbish so I could buy a £29.99 Argos jobby.

Get the Argos jobby, and watch the prices come down more. Also remember you'll need to buy Blu-ray DVDs before it will be worth switching.

I don't know if there is a premium for Blu-Ray versions of movies (not a massive buyer of movies, never built up a collection of VHS or Beta tapes either).

However, if you do decide to go for Blu-Ray, might be worth checking some web shopping/ comparison sites. I know around Christmas some site was offering 7 Blu-Ray DVDs with the player... at least that meant there were some DVDs to use immediately to try out for quality.

Also worth considering is the Playstation 3. It's a games console with a blu-ray player built in, so (if you/someone you live with are interested in games) you get 2 for the price of 1. And (according to my gamer DP) the PS3 is used to test blu-ray discs when they come out so you should always be able to play the disc/extras, no matter what the disclaimer says at the beginning of the disc.

Hi. We got a PS3 specifically to use as a Blu-Ray player. My DH told me that the software on it was upgradable so that as the technology changes, the player would remain up-to-date. We don't use the PS3 for gaming. I don't know much, but I know that the picture on Blu-Ray DVDs is really very good.

are they actually scratch resistant?

WebDude · 14/03/2010 23:52

I think you'd find they're a little less resistant (they hold a lot of data, so scratches must be avoided at all cost).
