Sky broadband - wireless coverage is crap! Is there anything I can do?

We have recently switched from BT broadband to Sky and have now found our wireless coverage is really rubbish. We moved at the same time and went from an old house with thick walls to a modern house where I would have thought it would be easier to pick up the wireless connection.

The box is in the study, downstairs and I can pick up the wireless connection in the lounge next door and the playroom opposite but apart from that nowhere else. As I take my laptop into the kitchen you can watch the bars drops as it looses the connection.

Is there anything I can do to boost the signal? I really like having the laptop in the kitchen to mumsnet look up online recipes etc. BT offered a much better coverage and I am considering returning to them at the end of the Sky contract.

Have a look at the discussion titled "Where should I put my broadband box?", there's someone having a very similar set of problems.

Moving to BT probably won't make any difference as the wireless box they give you probably works in exactly the same way.

Agreed - the ISP really shouldn't (at least I can't see how it would) make any difference to your wireless.

The only possibility is that the hardware that Sky gave you (the router) is duff, or (as BadgersPaws suggests) you haven't positioned the box as optimally as in your old house.

Assume that the box has the same wireless network (g, b, n?) as your old one?
