I would like an i phone but want to spend as little as possible. There are better deals on the older model. Will it really matter?

I had a 3G and got upgraded to a 3GS recently. The main difference is that the 3GS does video. The quality of the iPhone camera and video is pretty average compared with Nokias and Sony Ericssons, so I'd say go for the lower priced 3G unless video is really important to you.

The big difference is actually that the 3GS is faster and more powerful than the 3G.

The instant difference that will make is slight, applications open a bit quicker and the interface feels a touch snappier. However be aware that with a 3G you are not buying the latest hardware.

At the moment I think that all apps in the Apple App Store run on all iPhones, however that might change over time, though that said there is a huge user base of older iPhones so change might not be as fast as we think.

Other smaller differences are that the 3GS comes with more memory, supports more bluetooth devices and has a compass so it can tell which way you're pointing.

How important those smaller things are is up to you.
