Just to let anyone wanting a new laptop know that Asda is selling off the Compaq CQ61 machines at 247.00 (reduced by about a hundred quid from a couple of weeks ago). I spotted the price of 297.00 last Saturday and they went down another 50 quid on Monday, to make way for more expensive machines coming in.

Although described on the box as a notebook, it has a 15.6" 16:9 screen, with HDMI and VGA sockets, 3x USB ports, 'proper' keyboard (with number section on the right side) and has 160 GB hard drive and 2 GB of RAM (which some people might argue is the minimum for Win 7).

Local Asda Living has now sold all 4 they had, but a nearby branch still has about 30 machines, so not everyone has spotted them (yet). Just about to let my sister know, as her old desktop machine could do with replacing!

Does it have an optical drive, webdude?

I assume it's these CQ61s.

Yes, that's one. Sorry, had no net access Sunday/Monday else I'd have answered.

Unfortunately, having mentioned the laptop to my sister by text on Sunday morning, no branch within 50 miles of her had any left.

Seeing as she's my big sister, and has helped me out a lot, I'm giving her the one I bought.

No doubt there will be some other bargain along within the next 12 months so I won't lose out (at present have nothing with HDMI input to plug this new laptop into, and have been thinking about getting a Blu-ray DVD player, so may end up with a PS3 Slim instead (!)
