Somehow downloaded a pseudo security programme (Security something or other) onto a standalone pc which blocks access to all other programs via Windows, including the antivirus one, and cannot be easily uninstalled as can't access Add/Remove. Will the IT bods be able to remove it and keep my files (not recently backed up of course )?

If you hit the F8 key before the Windows screen appears, and can see the "Safe Mode" menu, then odds are the IT bods will be able to do any anti-virus scans and wipe the nasty without damage to your files.

(Most people remember the backups they didn't do after the need for them, you are not alone, so don't get too downhearted about that!)
