Does anyone know if it is possible to use an iTouch to do geocaching? I presume that as there is no phone signal it is not possible to download the data.

I'd have thought that it's more the lack of a GPS that's the problem, nothing to do with the phone part.

But you can use the iPhone for geocaching and that relies on triangulation, not GPS.

The iPhone 3G does have GPS, which kind of does work using triangulation.

Earlier iPhones and the iPod touch do have a "locate me" capability.

On the iPhone it will try to use the phone cell that you are connected to to give a location. It only uses that one cell though so it's not strictly triangulation.

Both the iPhone and the iPod Touch can also try to use the WIFI point you are connected to to give a location. Again it only uses that single point so it's not really triangulation.
