My netbook has broken!

Hi, please advise if you can.
My netbook internet security ran out yesterday.
Also I have been fiddling around with all the settings trying to get wireless set up on it.
I bought CA security from Argos which strangely came as a USB/memory chip type piece of hardware with no instruction manual and plugged it in a couple of days ago to protect the computer. I don't know if I managed to do this right.
Today, the netbook opens up with the message telling me that my (original) internet security has run out.
Nothing works.
Clicking just results in the egg timer symbol.
I have to turn it off using the power button.
What can I do? I've got important work on there, I'm in the middle of job applications.
I might have to take it back to the shop but I'm betting they'll charge me a load of dosh for a repair.

I'm assuming it's Windows. It should be possible to boot it into safe mode and run some tests. I suggest googling for safe mode asus eee (replace asus eee with your netbook model) to see how to get safe mode. I'm sure a Windows expert will be along shortly to advise on what tests you should run in safe mode.
