Memory for Laptop

My laptop is incredibly slow these days. I am thinking it doesn't have enough memory maybe. It is running vista and has 1gb memory. I cannot seem to find the model on any memory sites (HP Compaq G6010EM) they just keep saying it doesn't exist . What am I doing wrong then?

1gb should be just about OK for Vista, especially if you're not doing anything "unusual" with it like photographic, video or development work.

Is there any way that you can give it a clean? Find out what's running on start up and remove anything that you don't need?

Well that's the thing BP - I don't know whether I actually need half of the things to run on start up or not! Nor do I know what most of the processes running are when I start Task Manager

I do clean up and defrag it regularly btw.

Download this and run it:
www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

It's a pretty good scanner that will rummage through your machine and see if there's anything "not good" on it that might be making it slow down.

As to what's running on start up and in Task Manager a very quick tip is to look what's taking up the memory or CPU and to Google for the name.

It'll give you some idea of what's doing what.

I don't know what half of the stuff these days is either but I do know where to look
